About the Contest

Our 2020 “Moments Matter” Photo Contest asked participants to submit a photo of a moment in time significant to them. It’s these moments that remind us to cherish the people and places we love most, and at Illinois Mutual we value the little things that enrich our lives. The public was invited to vote on their favorite entries, and charitable donations were awarded to each Top Ten winner’s eligible charity of choice. This contest was open to the public, including our employees, policyowners, agents and retirees.

Fight like Champ

Michael D. - Missouri

This moment in time changed the life of this dog and then my family. He is finally at a place where he feels safe and loved. A group of thousands of his supporters calling themselves “ CHAMPions” would be born from this moment and he would then lead them to helping animals in distress and help bring a voice to the voiceless. Even though Champ is our family member now, these two in the picture ( Rescuer and Rescued) still have a bond that can’t be broken, even 3 1/2 years later. The CHAMPions even got together on his Facebook page and picked this picture out of dozens to choose from for this contest. It means very much to them and always brings out so much emotion within the group. This moment in time started it all! The CHAMPions are a force now because of this moment in time.

I coached High School football for the last 30 years, In this Photo one of our Sr's and Capt Alex Enes come to realize on Thanksgiving Day, our last game of the year .Alex realizes he will never play football again. He will never play the game he played since he was six years when he dreamed of playing in college and then the NFL. Alex searched me out as the clock was winding down and just broke down in tears as we were hugging he was thanking me for making him the man he is today and for the best 4 years of his life. It was special moment with Alex and extra special since Alex's grand father was my coach.

The Magic Moment

Part of the beauty of a Winter sunset is being caught off-guard, being surprised, delighted, and dazzled toward the end of the day. I think the rare occurrence and development of this sunset (low humidity plus cleaner air equals more intense sunset colors) was kind of fun and the unexpected part of the day. This type of sunset is seen during the winter months between November through February when the sun sets on more of an angle, drawing out the time it takes to set. Lastly, the clouds may be more conducive to beautiful sunsets in the winter, as a result of a stronger temperature gradient between the north and southern latitudes, and a stronger jet stream. After a day or two of clouds, or rain, or snow, and these weather systems move westward, they set up conditions for stunning sunsets draped by clouds.

I was adopted as an infant and never was able to meet my birth parents. However, last year, after 55 years, a birth sibling found me. I found out I was the oldest of 5 sisters. We met and it was like we have known each other our entire lives. We all live relatively close so we are able to get together frequently. Having a whole, new, big family has been one of the most wonderful events that has ever happened to me. I cannot express how much love we all have for one another. This picture, where we are all together, shows the loving spirit my mother has left in each of our hearts.

The Greater Peoria Honor Flight sends veterans to Washington for a day. My friends and I dress up in 1940s style dresses and makeup to welcome them home. A lot of people come out to welcome them home and we enjoy seeing the delight on the veterans faces when they see a huge crowd! Pictured are my friend Kristen and I as we grabbed a "snapshot" with a WWII veteran.
